Hostas come in a wide range of sizes and as you go through our listing you will see a letter in parenthesis after the name which denotes the height of the plant…the ledger below will help to convert this to inches.
Earth Angel
[L] (Hans Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery) A variegated sport from H. ‘Blue Angel’…large
thick heart-shaped blue-green leaves have a wide creamy-white border. Topped with lavender flowers.
Ebony Towers
[M] (Dean) This introduction from Don Dean loves the sun and becomes a dense mound
of glossy, wavy green foliage that appears to be in constant motion. Speckled red-purple petioles form the
base and stalwart, saturated, black-purple scapes of 40+” emerge in late August which display 2 3/4”
lavender flowers. And for a stunning finish come giant black-purple seed pods.
El Nino PP14632
[M] (Warmerdam) Sport of H. ‘Halcyon’…very blue leaves surrounded by a tidy bright
white border. Good substance and topped with lilac flowers. In the right location this plant can be
absolutely stunning and will look great all season.
**Eleanor Lachman
[S] (Lachman) Small clump has leaves with creamy-yellow to white centers surrounded by a wide dark
green border. Substance is above average and lavender flowers show in July. Needs good morning light to stimulate vigor but do
avoid the hot afternoon sun.
Electrocution
[S/M] (Avent) We have been very impressed with this new intro from Tony Avent...long green leaves have a
yellow border (later turns to white) and are twisted severely as they reach upward. A vigorous grower that definitely requires a
second look when you walk by. Lavender flowers in July.
Elkhart Lake
[M] (Cees Visser) This plant has been around for a while but has not been available until now…comes from the
same gentleman who gave us H. ‘Harry van de Laar’. Hybrid between H. ‘June’ and H. hypoleuca and has huge leaves of a soft
green color with white backs. Rounded leaves have a very nice wavy margin and are topped with lavender flowers.
Emerald Ruff Cut
[M] (Anderson) Newer sport of H. ‘Sea Angel Wings’…nicely ruffled leaves have a beautiful gold center
surrounded by an emerald-green border. Vigorous grower with good substance and topped with pale lavender flowers.
Empress Wu
[VL] (Skaggs) This is definitely a situation where a picture is worth a
thousand words! When folks ask us what’s the largest hosta we carry we no longer give it
any thought...this seedling of H. ‘Big John’ and one of the “Xanadu” series from Brian &
Virginia Skaggs of FOoSF fame, surpasses all hostas we know. Huge dark green leaves
have deeply impressed veins and tremendous substance. In 5 or 6 years a mature clump can
reach 4 1/2’ tall. Topped with pale lavender flowers on 5’ scapes in midsummer...truly a
magnificent specimen for any garden. (offering 3rd yr tc plants)
Enterprise
[M] (Q&Z Nursery) New sport from H. ‘Captain Kirk’ with a creamy-white
center and a wide dark green border. Seems to be a good
grower for a white centered hosta and has good substance.
Topped with lavender flowers.
Essence of Summer
[M] (Jan van den Top) A wonderful
tetraploid sport of H. ‘Warwick Essence’…extremely thick, rounded, medium green leaves are a little
darker color than the parent and topped with large fragrant white flowers in late summer.
Tremendous substance and vigorous grower.
Eye Catcher
[M] (Goodwin) The brightest color in the spring garden…truly viridescent. This plant
needs to be grown in the sun in order to maintain it’s interesting gold hue. The leaves are cupped and
corrugated on this vigorous grower and the clump is topped with purple flowers.
Fat Cat
[L] (Ward) Large hybrid from H. ‘Sagae’...rounded gold leaves have some corrugation and are held in an upright
manner. Will develop into a significant clump topped with near-white flowers.
**Final Summation PPAF
[L] (Solberg) Bob Solberg brings us a beautiful sport of H. ‘Sum and Substance’
with a wide dark green edge. The huge round leaves have a rich sheen and are slightly cupped. Lavender
flowers in July.
Fire Island
[M] (Brincka) Stunning red petioles with color that reaches up into the leaf that hold bright
yellow to greenish-yellow wavy leaves. Even though the intensely bright foliage greens up a little later in
the season, the spring color will remain a vivid memory. Topped with lavender flowers.
Fireworks PPAF
[S] (Walters Gardens) Sport from H. ‘Loyalist’…leaves are narrow and stiff and stand
straight up. Leaves have a creamy white center surrounded by a very dark green margin. Topped with pale
lavender flowers.
First Frost
[M] (Scolnik/Solberg) Sport of H. ‘Halcyon’ and makes a medium clump of beautiful blue
leaves framed by a creamy yellow to frosty white border. Superb substance and will hold its looks long
after others have gone down in the fall. Lavender flowers.
First Love
[L] (Fransen) This new intro is the reverse sport of H. montana ‘Aureomarginata’
and will grow into a beautiful clump of somewhat shiny, yellow-centered leaves with a green
border that shows some streaking to the center. Just like the parent, H. ‘First Love’ will be an
early riser and can use protection from early frosts. Lavender flowers midsummer.
First Mate
[S] (Machen) Tetraploid of H. sieboldii ‘Kabitan’…grows into a small dense clump of narrow yellow leaves with a
dark green border. Vigorous grower topped with lavender flowers.
Fleet Week
[L] (Scheer) A large to very large, upright mounding blue with
gracefully rippling edges. The plant has an exciting presence that draws the eye and
holds it. This ‘Niagara Falls’ hybrid is fast growing with excellent substance, a
standout in the garden all season. Palest lavender fertile flowers are held on
semi-pendant scapes.
Flemish Gold
[M] (Van Eechaute) This new gold is a seedling from H. ‘Salute’ and comes from Danny Van Eechaute of
Belgium...thick leaves have a smooth finish, are gently rippled and held in an upright manner. Striking hosta that is proving to be
quite vigorous. Topped with near-white flowers in midsummer.

Flemish Sky
[M] (Van Eechaute) Great blue from Danny Van Eechaute of Belgium…white backed blue
leaves are wedge-shaped and the color is a unique “chalky” blue. The margin is quite wavy and some
cupping is evident. Clump is topped with lavender flowers.
Fluted Fountain
[L] (Dean) Green truly is beautiful when it is a tall, vase-shaped fountain
of foliage with deeply impressed veins, tight ruffles, and a sharp, twisted tip. Strong erect
scapes are in proportion to the plant and hold a bouquet of near-white flowers accented by
bracts with rose-red centers. This one does well in a wide range of light conditions. A large
and vigorous cross from H. ‘Sun Power’ and H. ‘Donahue’s Piecrust’.
**Fourteen Carats
[M] (Fransen) The all gold form of H. ‘George Smith’...yellow-gold
leaves have great substance and make a beautiful clump topped with near-white flowers.
Fragrant Bouquet
[L] (Aden) Apple-green leaves have wide light yellow margins and are topped with very large white flowers
that are fragrant. Vigorous grower that is tolerant of some afternoon sun.
Fragrant Dream
[L] (Fransen/van den Top) Sport of H. ‘Fragrant Bouquet’ with dark green leaves
surrounded by a light yellow border that turns almost white late. A vigorous grower topped with near-white
large fragrant flowers.
Fragrant King
[L] (Jan van den Top) Sport of H. ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ with dark green leaves
framed by a creamy-white border. Leaves are covered with “bloom” and have great substance. Vigorous
grower topped with fragrant lavender flowers late in the season.
Very limited and only available in 2010… **Fragrant Light
[M] (Van Eechaute) This sport is the reversed variegation of H. ‘Fragrant
Bouquet’...leaves are yellow with a light-green border and the center turns almost white by the
end of the season. Not the easiest plant to grow so placement in sufficient, but not too much,
morning sun will be very important. Availability is limited and we believe only for this year.
really stands out! Fragrant Queen
[M/L] (Jan van den Top) Tetraploid sport of H. ‘Fragrant King’...thicker
leaves, wider creamy-white border and a super “doer”! We are very impressed with the appearance
and performance of this plant, holds up well all season and still looks great late in the summer when
it is topped with pale lavender fragrant flowers.
Fragrant Star
[M] (Jan van den Top) A cross between H. ‘Invincible’ and H. ‘June’ creates a
newer fragrant hosta. Size, shape and form are the same as H. ‘Invincible’ but the leaves are blue.
The fragrant flowers are lavender.
**Fran Godfrey
[VL] (Park Green Nurseries) New and from Great Britain...a sport from H.
‘Sum and Substance with yellowish-green leaves that are surrounded by a dark green border.
Lavender flowers appear on 4’ spikes.
Francheska
[M] (Livingston) This wonderful hybrid comes from H.
‘Harmony’...the pointed green leaves have a blue-green cast and are surrounded by
a nice wide border that begins yellow and turns creamy-white and frosty. Leaves
have good substance, are somewhat wavy and create a fairly dense, upright clump
that will make a commanding statement in the garden. Topped in early summer
with near-white flowers.
Frost Giant
[L] (Lefever) Sturdy hosta that makes a large clump of blue-green leaves framed by a
bright yellow border that becomes creamy in summer. Good substance and vigorous growth rate on a
stately plant.
Frosted Dimples
[M] (Dean) Pebbled blue leaves are framed by a
variable creamy-white border. Leaves have tremendous substance and form
a dense flat mound topped with near white flowers.
Frosted Frolic
[S] (Livingston) Charming smaller hosta…semi-rounded H. ‘Frost Giant’
blue-green leaves sport a wide creamy-yellow border with some streaking.
Thick leaves are rigid and held somewhat upright creating a substantial
H. ‘Frosted Frolic’ clump topped with lavender flowers.
**Frosted June
[M] (Van den Top/Van Eechaute) This sport from H. ’June Fever’ goes through a
unique seasonal color change. Shiny yellow leaves have a thin light green border that changes to
creamy-white...the center changes to a light green. Lavender flowers.
Frosted Mouse Ears
[S] (Deckert) One of the many sports of H. ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ and this one is
superb...thick blue leaves with a wide creamy-white border that turns to white later. Plants offered are
small, but have proven to grow very well. Same lavender flowers as the parent.
from Don Dean of Minnesota… Fruit Punch
[M] (Dean) Watermelon petioles hold vibrant lemon-yellow leaves
edged in blackberry for SPRING foliage. In time, changes bring wavy kiwi colored,
sized and shaped leaves of good substance which quickly form a dense flat mound.
In August and early September saturated strawberry colored scapes are topped with
grape-purple flowers edged in white. This one looks best grown in moderate shade to
shade and has proven to be a vigorous grower.
Fujibotan
[M] (Japan, NR) Beautiful specimen with fully double lavender flowers found on Mount
Fuji by Gotemba Nursery. Grown mainly for the flowers but the tight green clump also makes a nice
statement. Older clumps are capable of producing stems with over 50 flowers.
Fulda
[S/M] (Klose) Very blue leaves of good substance on a German Tardiana...topped with lavender flowers.
Funky Monkey
[M] (Scheer) Unlike any hosta we’ve seen! It is a medium
sized plant that emerges chartreuse with deep red/black petioles, the color extending
high into the leaf veins on the undersides. The petioles are long
and the leaves do not cover them, showcasing the deep color.
As the season progresses, some leaves turn all gold, some leaf
centers turn gold and the edges deepen to a lustrous green, however
the irregular borders are unlike any typical variegation.
Shiny, good substance, sun tolerance, good growth rate, flowers
deeply colored and fertile...it creates exciting babies!.
